WordCamp is tomorrow, and I'm on the hook for the "What's New in 2.1" discussion. Here's my quick-and-dirty list of new stuff.
- Spellchecker in TinyMCE.
- Exporter.
- Pages can be private and draft.
- Pages have their own caps.
- A Page can be used as the front page.
- Latest posts can be moved off the front page and on to another page.
- Pseudo-cron is used for future posting. No more NOW().
- Link manager overhauled.
- Links can have subcategories.
- New login screen.
- More AJAX to avoid page reloads.
- Blog privacy. Turn off pinging and tell robots to go away.
- User paging and searching.
- WP_Error class.
- Include files reorganized.
- Lots of new API.
- Script loader.

Is it possible to have and maintain multiple blogs on the same wordpress installation as a feature too? I would love that because it simplifies the process, and I can have a photoblog along with my normal blog..

This sounds great! But how about the Shuttle beautification project? You’re mentioning a new login screen, does that mean that the Shuttle project isn’t finished yet?
And regarding the spellchecker: How will that work for non-english blogs? Will there be an option somewhere to choose another language?

Ah well, appear to be too late to chime in. Anyhow, was going to suggest (1) auto-save draft every x seconds/minutes functionality for post writing interface.
(2)A much more extensible role system along with private posting would be aces, assigning roles to groups of individuals like friends, family, colleagues and having choices of visibility to the groups and individuals within the groups per post.
(3)Easier to use image management would be swell as would (4)official work started on implementing native support for openid and other identity protocols, which are too young yet + non-standardized but it doesn’t hurt to start planning.
(***)And *extensive* documentation would be a huge upgrade for this version.
Overboard as usual, but think of it as future considerations unless the new API will allow for plugins to take care of most of these.
Number 1 is the feature that I’ve been dying for though.

Still no ability to make a post a sticky? What about full cut and paste ability in the TinyMCE? The thumbnail generator needs more options for size and especially quality and there should be an easier way to insert photos into posts and have text wrap around it. Right now the only way to insert text from other sources like Word etc…. and avoid all kinds of horrors requires you to move it to Notepad first then re-cut and paste it into WordPress, cannot this be resolved? Regardless of what others say, I would like to see the ability to change font size and colors in TinyMCE and improve upon what I find to be its buggy, often problematic performance that takes up time correcting. I like WordPress a lot but just as the fact that a 2.1 is coming out indicates, there is always room for improvement

Really like to see shuttle in 2.1… the interface damn need a overlook, the code files under the wp-admin is a hell to fix gave it a week and i just lost the feeling to make it happen. Because i had to make it all happen again if there is a new release, so this is my biggest hope for wordpress.
I hope that the link page changes will include speeding up the Links Updated (or whatever) image, which slows the whole process down as it waits for an exclamation mark to appear.

[...] I’m also very excited about the work term coming up. Not only do I get job experience (always useful), I can also undertake some little projects of my own that I don’t have time for during the study semester. The one I’m looking forward to the most is the improvement, both functionally and visually, of this site/blog. Of special note, I’m interested to see what WordPress 2.1 can bring to the table. From what I’m reading, there’s going to be quite a few improvements that I’m definitely glad to see happening. Of special note, I’m extremely impressed and excited about the administration area remodeling currently being undertaken. The project is called ‘Shuttle’. From the mockups, it looks spectacular. I can hardly wait to get my hands on it and try it out. I’ve already begun to look at things that I want to incorporate into a new theme and I’ll try to get some of my ideas down on paper, just as a rough sketch of what I want to accomplish with the new theme. It already seems great in my mind, but it’ll be a matter of if I can actually get it down in code and working. Oh, you can’t imagine how much fun it is sitting up late at night trying to get these themes to work properly in all the major browsers. Why can’t they just all get along eh? [...]

[...] So here’s the breakdown. Under WP 2.1 alpha 3, the ‘Manage’ tab has: Posts, Pages, Uploads, Categories, Files, Import and Export. In the Admin panel, the ‘Link’ tab has been replaced by ‘Blogroll’ which seems really sparse as all it has are your links and the ability to add a link. I think that if they had to make a ‘Blogroll’ tab, it would have been smarter to keep the ability to manage the Link Categories from that tab also. Anyway, the ‘Blogroll’ tab has: Manage Blogroll, Add Link and Import Links. The presentation tab has a new addition that may or may not be theme-independent. It has the ability to edit the header’s image and color. In trying to test this feature out, I clicked the advanced tab and it added a little box that was out of my screen. I’m using a 1280 by 768 resolution screen (an HP Pavilion f1703) so maybe that is an example of CSS gone crazy or the AJAX wave (or madness)sweeping various applications. They took the ‘Comments’ tab out from under the ‘Manage’ tab and it has its own headline in the admin panel, Comments. This would be fine for blogs with lots of comments because you have 1 less click to make (it used to be “Manage” and then “Comments”). Before I close, I love that they have improved the ‘post management’ area. Before, my WP 2.0.5 install, I made use of an Enhanced Post view plugin. The WP developers must have taken a page out of that plugin developer’s books because I won’t need the Enhanced Post View plugin anymore. It’s got tools to show posts by month, category and a search function. They still don’t offer the ability to regulate how many posts are shown on the screen at once. That should be easy, no? I would rather show 100 posts at once than click through 25 posts, 4 times. Check out some reviews of what’s new/hot or not in WP 2.1 alpha over at Blogging Pro, a list of plugins compatible with WP 2.1 alpha 3, and ‘official’ word from a Wordpress developer about what will be in WordPress version 2.1. Does 2.1 fix the Trackback/Pingback bugs that many have encountered? If you’re not familiar with this problem, ever since upgrading to 2.0.x, many of us cannot send and/or receive trackbacks and pingbacks. Help!
