The Appliances Are Watching

March 30, 2006
by Ryan Boren

I am surrounded by electronics in my home office. Something has been beeping intermittently all night, and I can’t tell where the beep is coming from. I started turning things off and still the beep persists. I’m getting concerned. :-)

As long as it’s not the UPS for your coffee maker, I think you’ll be alright…

Oh, and let us know whenever you figure out what it was (or it disappears on its own, just as mysteriously as it appeared)…

Try the smoke detector. I spent days looking for the beep and it turned out to be the smoke detector in the next room.

Stumbled upon your blog while setting up WordPress. Anyway, you should make sure someone didn’t sneak in one of these: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/79be/

Reminds me of a bash.org quote:

” hm. I’ve lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can’t figure out where in my apartment it is.”

    ;p

Look at the bright side: If it’s a battery powered device that causes the beeping you will only have a few more nights without sleep and it’ll stop all by itself…

I had a power supply beep like that once. But the scary part was how it waited untill I would walk away before i beeped again. I eventually had to recruit another recon man to pinpoint the beeping.

Do you have a small travel alarm in a drawer? Does your wrist-watch have an a larm setting on it?Does your stove have press-contact settings? If so, possibly timer needs to be shut off if you used it recently. If you have a smoke detector, the battery may be getting weak. When you solve the problem, I’d be interested in knowing – in case it hapens here! G’nite!
