2001 Hugo Awards

September 2, 2001
by Ryan Boren

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was awarded the Hugo yesterday. It beat out A Storm of Swords, Calculating God, The Sky Road, and Midnight Robber. In that company, I would have rated old Harry last. I have read all of the Harry Potter books and find them quite entertaining. However, they are not in league with these other books, not even close. A Storm of Swords is epic fantasy at its best. Calculating God is a wonderful piece of science fiction that speculates on the nature and existence of God. Midnight Robber is another bit of voudon influenced greatness from Nalo Hopkinson. Harry can’t hang here. Are the Hugos becoming the Grammys? Maybe the Hugo awarders thought a Harry Potter win would give the awards better visibility. I dunno. When I compare Harry Potter to last years winner, A Deepness in the Sky, a mad laugh starts to bubble forth.
