Sessions Says Leahy Has Dropped ‘So Help Me God’ From Witness Oaths

The Alabama Republican is angry with Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., for leaving out the customary “so help me God” when swearing in those who testify before the committee. Leahy says he reads the oath from a card and did not realize the phrase was not written there.

“Ninety-five percent of the people believe in God. An invocation of his name, in conjunction with the seriousness of telling the truth, has an importance beyond mere legal requirement,” Sessions said Thursday.

Technically speaking, the phrase is not a legal requirement. Although the Constitution outlines the specific oath a president must say upon taking office, there is no such rule governing witness oaths before congressional committees. Sessions is considering legislation that would make the language part of the Senate rules.

Oh goody, more grandstanding. “I’m a more devout Christian than you are. Jesus loves me better.” Shut up, get back to work, and stop the my Bible is bigger than yours pissing contests.
